We offer flip up awning windows in all aluminum frames. Flip up windows make a unique pass – through window for a kitchen or bar area. They are also referred to as gas piston awning windows because they use a gas piston on each side of the window to assist in opening and closing. The pistons also hold the window open when raised. These windows open like the hatchback on a car.
Krasiva Windows and Doors is a dealer for Western Window Systems. Western Window systems has been a manufacturer here in Phoenix since 1959. Their flip up windows are specialty windows that are built on a limited basis. This makes them considerably more expensive than a regular window.
They can be used for a larger opening than a fold up window.
Each one can be built up to 8 feet wide and 4 ½ feet tall. You can daisy chain two of them together side by side with a support post between to get up to a 16 foot opening.
They are extremely easy to operate. Just turn the handle on the inside and gently push it out. The pistons do the work of flipping it up. See the below video.
Flip-up windows are just one large piece of glass in the frame. When closed, they just look like a picture window. There are no obstructions in the viewing area. This is a unique feature not found in the other types of pass-through windows.
They are an alternative option to a bi-folding window (link to page). Bi-folding windows need room on one side for the panels to stack and project out approximately 3 feet. Flip up windows park up at the top of the opening out of the way.
Larger flip up windows may require some re-framing to the opening to support the weight at the top. This can add additional cost, depending on the existing wall system.
Flip-up windows are available with a zero sill (no bottom) for restaurants and bars, but it is not recommended for residential use. Water, air, and insects can come in the bottom if the flip-up is ordered with no sill.
